AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY ALUMNI TO MEET

Papua New Guinean graduates of Australian universities are being encouraged to attend a major alumni gathering in Australia next month.

The Australian Universities International Alumni Convention 2006 (AUIAC 2006) will be held in Brisbane, Queensland, from 13-15 September.

The event brings together graduates of Australian universities from across the world to explore the most pressing professional, business and cultural issues of the day.

Attendees have the opportunity to hear dynamic international speakers, develop first-rate professional and personal contacts, meet fellow graduates and exchange ideas.

His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC, the Governor-General of Australia, said the convention would be a “magnificent event”.

The Governor-General, who is co-patron of AUIAC, added: “I support AUIAC 2006, not as a talkfest, but as a genuine opportunity to spearhead solutions, to learn from one another’s cultural differences and to establish quality personal, professional and community linkages.”

Australia’s High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency Mr Michael Potts, said: “The convention offers wonderful opportunities to develop strong people-to-people links across national boundaries, share knowledge and engage in stimulating debate.

“A large number of Papua New Guineans have studied in Australia so we would really welcome a strong PNG contingent at the convention.

“I would also encourage all PNG graduates of Australian universities to get involved in a new Alumni Association in PNG which is also due to be launched later this year.”

AUIAC 2006 is being organised by the Queensland Government and the combined Queensland universities. It is the fifth convention to be held since the inaugural one in Adelaide in 1998.
