Good sports in PNG Law and Justice Sector

The Australian High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency Mr Chris Moraitis, has commended the PNG Law and Justice Sector on its continuous efforts to finding solutions to the country’s law and order challenges.

Mr Moraitis was speaking at the opening of the second annual PNG Law and Justice Sector Sports Day in Port Moresby today.

“The recent events in Mount Hagen give an indication of the law and order challenges facing PNG today,” Mr Moraitis said.

“But while the challenges are great so is the commitment to finding solutions and I applaud the efforts of the sector in working together and with other partners like Australia.”

Mr Moraitis said Australia was proud to support the law and justice sector in PNG, providing K80 million this year through the aid program in recognition of the importance of a strong legal system to support the rule of law, governance, security and the overall prosperity of PNG.

“We will continue to work in strong partnership with the sector to help achieve the vision set out in PNG’s National Law and Justice Policy, of a just, safe and secure society for all,” Mr Moraitis said.

“Events like the sports day play an important role in bringing together key stakeholders helping to build and consolidate relationships between the various agencies which are so important in developing a successful law and justice sector.

“Beyond the obvious health and activity benefits, sport can also teach us much about life.

“It teaches us about teamwork, it teaches us how to get along with others, and it teaches us to work together to achieve a common goal.”

Mr Moraitis said as well as the benefits to individuals, sports and physical activity also bring great benefits to communities through such things as improved health and education, rehabilitation, crime prevention, and gender equality.

“The law and justice sector has been doing some excellent work to raise awareness and bring about action to address HIV and AIDS, which includes all the law and justice agencies developing workplace HIV policies – this is just one initiative among many.”
