Media should provide Papua New Guineans with tools to be masters of their own development - Feakes
“The media should provide Papua New Guineans with the tools and information needed to be masters of their own development.”
Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea (PNG), John Feakes, said this during his keynote address during the Media Council of Papua New Guinea’s (MCPNG) Media Breakfast 2010 in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province on Tuesday, 10 August 2010.
The Media Breakfast 2010 was themed ‘Advancing the Millenium Development Goals (MDG’s) in Papua New Guinea’.
Mr Feakes who spoke on the role of the media in advancing the MDG’s in PNG said: “Communication is one of the keys to good development, getting out strong messages, understanding the challenges, and working together on solutions, are all areas where the media can play a strong role.”
He said being better informed about the issues and understanding the appropriate language to use about issues are ways the media can help itself become better communicators on development issues and subsequently ensure the consumers of their media are better informed.
The Australian Government through AusAID has been supporting the PNG media industry through its media for development initiative over a number of years.
