PNG-Aus Partnership launches new Wabag Market

The construction of a new market in Enga’s capital will improve accessibility, safety and hygiene standards for vendors and customers.

The new Wabag market project was launched today by Australian High Commissioner, Bruce Davis, Enga Governor, Sir Peter Ipatas, and the Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources and Wabag MP, Dr Lino Tom. Kandep MP, Alfred Manase also attended the event.

Australia will contribute up to PGK 10 million through the Papua New Guinea-Australia Partnership, working with the Wabag District Development Authority.

This project will involve close consultation with women’s groups, and those who buy and sell at the market to ensure their needs are met. UN Women will support an inclusive design process and community consultation.

High Commissioner Davis commented on the significance of market spaces across PNG.

“Markets play a critical role in maintaining and improving economic and food security for vendors, patrons and local businesses. They are at the centre of everyday life in PNG,” Mr Davis said.

This project is one of many examples of the PNG-Australia Partnership’s commitment to provide safe and accessible market spaces which help
