Lae, Morobe Province – Australia has joined partners from across Papua New Guinea at the 5th All Partners Forum of the Building Community Engagement in PNG (BCEP) program. BCEP is a key element of the PNG-Australia partnership, that works to strengthen citizen-government engagement to improve the delivery of services and provision of public goods.
Themed “Reflecting and learning together to strengthen our partnerships,” the forum brought together representatives from government, churches, civil society, and other development partners to celebrate examples of enhanced government-citizen engagement to strengthen policies and tackle issues that matter most to local communities.

Australian High Commission Representative, Christine Charity giving her opening remarks.
The forum is a central feature of BCEP that seeks to amplify local solutions to local problems and foster innovation. The forum serves as a platform for reflection, knowledge sharing, networking and planning.
Speaking at the forum held on 4 June, First Assistant Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, Mr. Sanja Pepae said,“ The PNGAus Partnership is characterised not only by bilateral cooperation but also by mutual respect, cultural connections, and a united vision for sustainable development.”
One of the most compelling sessions at the forum was the panel discussion on ‘Emerging Trends in Government–Civil Society Engagement in Papua New Guinea’s Changing Landscape 50 Years On’. Panellists from the media, civil society, church, and government, highlighted their roles in addressing youth development, misinformation, and community engagement in Papua New Guinea.
A seasoned journalist, Scott Waide, reflected on the evolving role of media in Papua New Guinea, advocating for active participation in development and maintaining relationships with power holders to influence change and accountability.
