For the first time ever and as part of a new pilot, Australia is pleased to be offer scholarships for undergraduate students to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects through our flagship Australia Awards program.
This pilot represents a new and exciting chapter in Papua New Guinea and Australia’s shared commitment to education, innovation and sustainable development.
The ten scholars selected for the Australia Awards STEM scholarship pilot have graduated from National Schools of Excellence from across Papua New Guinea.
High Commissioner Ewen McDonald congratulated the scholars on their individual achievements. He also said, “through these scholarships, Papua New Guineans will study at some of the world’s leading universities, gaining hands on experience and building global networks that will last a lifetime.”
Speaking on behalf of the inaugural cohort, Ms Leanne Bartsaka said, “the launch of this scholarship is more than financial support - it is a bridge between dreams and reality. It serves as a pathway that expands Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in PNG. It tells every young person that their background does not limit their future, and that dedication, discipline, and hope can truly open doors.”
The ten STEM scholars will join more than 110 Australia Awards scholars from Papua New Guinea, the largest cohort in five years including 56 women and eight PhD candidates to study in Australia across a diverse range of fields, including health, education, agriculture, governance, law, engineering, and information technology.
Together, they will join a global alumni network of change-makers, returning with skills and knowledge to drive Papua New Guinea’s future development.
