The Australia Awards Program has supported a dedicated pathway for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) educators to progress from a Graduate Certificate into a Masters qualification in Papua New Guinea.
20 Papua New Guinean teachers have begun a Master of STEM Education program, giving a unique opportunity for them to develop critical skills as teachers and school leaders.
The teachers completed their Graduate Certificate in STEM Education in November 2025, which was delivered through Australia Awards and Curtin University.
At a workshop to mark the beginning of the course, the Australian High Commission’s Acting Minister Counsellor Laura Marson told those present that Australia remains committed to STEM in PNG.
“By supporting STEM educators, we are supporting the next generation of problem solvers, innovators and leaders to shape the future of PNG. Australia is proud to stand with PNG as we build stronger schools and brighter futures together,” she said.
The new Masters program will help teachers design hands-on lessons, use real world problem solving, and bring STEM to life in classrooms. Many of the scholars are already senior teachers, lecturers and subject leaders in secondary schools and teacher training colleges.
One of the scholars, Dulcie Mariori, said the opportunity will enhance her knowledge to improve teaching and learning of STEM.
“The Masters program will help me to identify STEM related problems in the classroom, conduct research and develop resource materials for both students and teachers to use. It is important that the teachers know how to teach STEM for the students to learn STEM,” she said.
The new program reflects the growing momentum for STEM across PNG, and the importance of STEM education and educators to PNG’s future. This builds on the PNG Government’s National Education Plan 2020–2029 and the National School of Excellence Policy 2020, which both identify STEM as a national priority.
By investing in teachers, fostering collaboration, and promoting inclusive, hands-on approaches to STEM, the PNG–Australia Partnership will continue to support STEM pathways that build skills, open opportunities and help create a more innovative and sustainable Papua New Guinea.
