In early 2025 the Metoreia Urban Health Centre (MUHC) opened its doors to the public in Hanuabada with the goal of bringing much needed healthcare services to the Motu Koita people, surrounding communities and many more across Port Moresby.
On its first birthday, Metoreia has:
• delivered more than 500 safe births in its maternity wing;
• provided almost ten thousand of outpatient consultations;
• treated over 300 TB and HIV patients, supporting better long-term health outcomes;
• assisted more than 200 patients through its new eye clinic, delivered in partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation.
completed almost 2000 X-ray investigations to date; and
• offered minor surgery, dental care, pathology, pharmacy services, and general and paediatric consultations under one roof.
For many families, these services have been transformative with mothers able to give birth closer to their support networks and staff benefitting from a modern well-equipped space that allows them to serve the community with dignity.
As the centre enters its second year, Metoreia embodies the best of the enduring partnership between Papua New Guinea and Australia: locally built, high quality and serving the community.
Australia is supporting the PNG Government to deliver its long-term vision to provide high-quality health services to all Papua New Guineans.
The Australian-funded Metoreia Urban Health Centre was developed in partnership with Motu Koita Assembly, United Church, NCD Provincial Health Authority, National Department of Health and NCD Commission at a value of PGK41 million.
