Testing the limits: PNGDF Long Range Reconnaissance Unit selection course underway, 9 March 2026

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) Long Range Reconnaissance Unit (LRRU) commemorated its 30th anniversary last week. The milestone was marked through a series of activities, including capability demonstrations to dignitaries, a formal dinner, and a family day recognising the service and dedication of current and former members. Running concurrently with these celebrations is the LRRU Selection Course, currently being conducted at Goldie River Training Depot.

The LRRU have specialised skills and undergo rigorous training in diverse conditions to provide strategic and tactical support as required by the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF).

The LRRU selection course is designed to test and select soldiers who have the essential physical and mental qualities and character traits required for service in the elite and strategically important unit. The course tests PNGDF members with demanding physical and problem-solving tasks, to find individuals who can operate effectively in small teams, under extreme stress, and in complex environments, with limited support.

The LRRU Selection Course is coordinated and conducted by serving LRRU members in partnership with instructional staff from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) under the Defence Cooperation Program (DCP).

PNGDF candidates who successfully complete the LRRU Selection Course, and are assessed as suitable for further training, will progress to the next round of evaluation which consists of 12 specialist courses designed to develop individual skills, operational readiness, and team interoperability. Upon successful completion of all requirements, candidates will be qualified to join the LRRU.

The DCP is proud to support the important work of the LRRU and contribute to the longstanding defence partnership between PNG and Australia.
