The Autonomous Region of Bougainville came together at Bel Isi Park in Buka on Sunday 8 March to mark International Women’s Day, reflecting on women’s leadership and reinforcing the global call for rights, justice and action for all women and girls.
Hosted by the Bougainville Women’s Federation (BWF), the event united women, men, youth, alongside government representatives, faith-based organisations and civil society, and development partners to reflect on achievements and drive forward collective action for gender equality.
The BWF President Barbara Tanne highlighted the importance of sustained commitment to the cause.
“When women are safe, supported and able to lead, communities are stronger, more peaceful and more resilient,” she said.
In 2025, BWF boosted women’s confidence and leadership, expanded services for women and girls with disabilities, and advanced inclusive peacebuilding.
“These achievements show what is possible when local leadership is recognised and women’s voices are central to decision-making,” Ms Tanne added.
Together with the Autonomous Bougainville Government and community partners, Australia and New Zealand remain committed to advancing gender equality as a foundation for peace stability, and inclusive development.
Through this partnership, support continues for women’s leadership, inclusive decision-making and access to opportunities, ensuring that all women and girls across Bougainville can participate fully and safely in social, economic and political life.
