The Australian Defence Force (ADF) recently delivered a Rugby Union Sports Program at Murray Barracks in Port Moresby, bringing together members of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) and the local rugby community to build skills, knowledge and connections through sport.
The week-long program focused on coaching, sports trainer education and match officiating, with participants from the PNGDF and Capital Rugby Union (CRU) clubs taking part in a range of practical activities.
The program was delivered by ADF Sports Trainers, including World Rugby Trainer Captain Chloe Dray, and began with an introduction to coaching session. The program also included practical field sessions and referee training. Sports trainer education covering player welfare, injury prevention, concussion awareness, strength and conditioning, and match officiating was also provided.
There was also an opportunity for CRU coaches and trainers to gain further qualifications through assessments conducted by certified ADF Sports Trainers.
The program ended with friendly games that allowed new coaches, referees, and assistant referees to apply their skills in a supported environment. The training has helped prepare participants for the Commander’s Cup 2026, which will bring together PNGDF members for a rugby union tournament in Port Moresby in September.
On the final day, ADF Sports staff presented rugby union equipment to the PNGDF, with representatives from the Australian Government and Capital Rugby Union present.
Australian Defence Adviser, Colonel Nicholas Trotter, said the program demonstrated the value of sport in strengthening connections between Papua New Guinea and Australia.
“The PNG-Australia Alliance is built on strong relationships between our people, and this program is a great example of that in action,” COL Trotter said.
“By bringing together PNGDF personnel, community rugby clubs and ADF coaches and trainers, we have strengthened skills, built new connections and supported the continued growth of rugby in Papua New Guinea.”
“The enthusiasm shown by participants throughout the week was outstanding and highlights the positive impact sport can have in strengthening communities and the ties between our two nations.”
CRU’s participation in the program builds on Australian Government support for rugby union in PNG and the Pacific through PacificAus Sports and Team Up initiatives, including the PNG Rugby Inclusion Impact Program. The Inclusion Impact Program focuses on increasing opportunities for women and girls, and people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Beyond developing rugby skills, the program highlighted the strength of the PNG-Australia Alliance. Through sport, ADF and PNGDF personnel worked side by side, building relationships, sharing knowledge and strengthening the people-to-people connections that underpin the close ties between our two nations.
