Australia Defence Force assists in fixing vital road link in East Sepik
The Australian Defence Force (ADF), Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) and the East Sepik Provincial administration have worked together to repair the Pukpuk Bridge in Wewak, improving the road link between Moem Barracks, Wewak town and surrounding communities.
Wear and tear had prevented heavier vehicles from using the bridge, limiting access and services to the PNGDF Moem Barracks and the community.
The repairs have allowed trucks with loads of up to 30 tonnes to cross the bridge, improving the lives of thousands of people who live in or around Moem Barracks.
Australia’s Defence Cooperation Program funded equipment for the repairs and the PNGDF Engineer Battalion and the East Sepik Provincial Works Department provided the semi-constructed bridge. The PNGDF through the 2nd RPIR provided personnel for the construction.
The project demonstrates the close relationship between the ADF and PNGDF and their positive contribution towards the development of PNG.
