Australian High Commission celebrates
Universal Children’s Day
On Saturday 27 October, school children from Bavaroko Primary joined with the children of staff from the Australian High Commission to celebrate Universal Children’s Day. The event was held outdoors at the Australian High Commission grounds in Waigani.
The fun-filled day involved a range of different activities for children included a clown show, storytelling and reading, arts and craft, a treasure hunt, a jumping castle, face painting and sports.
Australian High Commissioner HE Ian Kemish AM and his wife Roxanne Martens as well as staff members and their kids were out in numbers to join in the celebration.
When welcoming the children, Mr Kemish noted the importance of this year’s themefor International Children’s day, “Every Child in School”, and emphasised the importance of focussing on education. “Ensuring access to quality education for all children, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged boys and girls, is both a right in principle and a right in practice”, he said.
Reading books was given to each of the children, and a further K500 of books was donated by the Australian High Commission to the Bavaroko Primary School library. Deputy Principal, Ms Anastasia Gabriel, when receiving the donation on behalf of the school said she was grateful for the support provided to the children of Bavaroko Primary School.
Early in September, Bavaroko Primary school, in partnership with the Australian High Commission, marked ‘Clean Up the World Day 2012’ with a big clean-a-thon at the school grounds.
