Consultation on new Manus Provincial Police Headquarters
A stakeholder consultation meeting about the redevelopment of the Manus Provincial Police Headquarters and Lorengau Police Station has been held in Port Moresby.
The Australian Government is funding the redevelopment as part of additional assistance to Manus Province. A series of stakeholder meetings is being held to plan the redevelopment.
The meeting on 30 January included: Manus Governor, the Honourable Charlie Benjamin,Manus Provincial Administrator Andrew Posong, Regional Police Commander Anton Bille, Provincial Police Commander Alex N’Drasal, representatives from the law and justice and health sector, and the Manus community.
Members of the Australian High Commission attended along with the PNG-Australia Law and Justice Partnership Transition Program and the project manager and architect, Alexander & Lloyd Pacific.
“This meeting has been very beneficial in gauging ideas from various sectors to contribute to a far better development of the project,” Provincial Police Commander N’Drasal said, adding that feedback would continue to be sought from stakeholders throughout the redevelopment.
Governor Benjamin said consultation between all stakeholders was crucial to the delivery of a final product that fully serves the whole community.
“This meeting allowed various groups and the political and administrative section of the province to contribute to this important project,” Governor Benjamin said.
The new design will provide better community access to policing services including for survivors of family and sexual violence and greater accessibility for people with disabilities.
The existing buildings will be demolished and temporary structures will be constructed during the rebuilding of the headquarters and station. The tender for construction is expected to be released in July, with construction scheduled to commence in September 2015 and be completed by the end of 2016.
