Australia and Papua New Guinea Undertake Impact Research

Researchers from Australia and Papua New Guinea met and shared ideas recently at PNG IMPACT, a major seminar on research, innovation and society hosted by the University of Papua New Guinea and James Cook University.

The seminar was a platform for promoting networking and collaboration among researchers from the two universities. The seminar showcased the benefits of this collaboration. Over 90 researchers gave presentations on topics relating to agriculture, fisheries, wild life conservation, medicine, ecology, health, infrastructure, economic development, governance and nation building. The common thread running through those presentations was sustainable development and its benefits for Papua New Guinea.

James Cook University’s Professor Stewart Lockie said James Cooks University’s twinning partnership arrangement with the University of Papua New Guinea is highly rewarding and producing excellent results for both universities.

“We are undertaking a series of learning and research activities that focus on enhancing the teaching quality and research capacity across both universities. When you consider the potential both universities have to work together in tropical research, it is likely that the James Cook University and University of Papua New Guinea collaboration could last for many years, with benefits for both countries,” said Professor Lockie.
