A tribute to McLay’s outstanding contribution to Australia-Papua New Guinea relations

On behalf of High Commissioner Bruce Davis and all the staff at the Australian High Commission Port Moresby and our Consulate-General in Lae, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr Alan McLay OL, who passed away this week.

Australia’s Foreign Minister, the Hon Julie Bishop MP has also conveyed her sympathies.

“I extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of Alan McLay. Alan made a significant contribution to the Australia-Papua New Guinea relationship over many years, including during his time as Honorary Consul for Australia in Lae and as President of the Lae Chamber of Commerce. His outstanding contributions in service of the business and broader community will be remembered,” Minister Bishop said.

We take this opportunity to pay tribute to Mr McLay’s tremendous contribution to the Australia–Papua New Guinea bilateral relationship. His dedication and active engagement served to strengthen the important business, cultural and people-to-people links between our two countries.

As the Australian Honorary Consul in Lae from 2013 to 2017, and subsequently as a Consular Warden, Mr McLay provided outstanding service as a representative of the Australian Government, assisting Australians in need and strengthening the connections and friendships between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Mr McLay’s passing is a significant loss for Papua New Guinea and Australia.  He will be greatly missed.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Mrs Nellie McLay and to all his family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.
