Partnership develops road safety understanding

The Department of Works has hosted two workshops this week in Mt Hagen and Kokopo. The focus was on working towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal to halve road deaths and injuries by 2020.

The free workshops will bring together key stakeholders from the police, Road Traffic Authority, National Roads Authority, and the road contracting industry to deepen knowledge and share ideas to strengthen road safety.

Secretary Wereh is pleased that the Department of Works is making progress with this issue.

“Safer, more reliable roads are at the heart of our operations. The World Health Organization estimate that there are more than 1,200 fatalities on our roads each year. This is a huge social and economic cost for our country”

“Road safety is a shared responsibility and it is vital that our engineers and contractors play their part. Accidents are three times more likely at road work sites. The Department of Works is committed to continuing to make these work sites safer for all road users.”

This road safety initiative is delivered through Papua New Guinea – Australia Transport Sector Support Program.
