AUSTRALIA SUPPORTS PNG ACCOUNTANCY BODY
A professional accounting society in PNG has become a member of two international accountancy bodies thanks to support from Australia.
Certified Practicing Accountants Papua New Guinea (CPA PNG) was admitted as an associate member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) on 10 November at the IFAC board meeting in Istanbul, Turkey.
CPA PNG's application was sponsored by CPA Australia.
On the same day CPA PNG was also admitted to the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA), a regional accountancy body of IFAC.
That application was supported by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.
Colin Murphy, a Director of CPA Australia and the acting head of the Western Australia Auditor-General's department, welcomed the move, which was announced at the CPA PNG and CPA Australia (PNG Branch) joint annual conference in Port Moresby last week.
Mr Murphy, who spoke at the conference, said: “CPA Australia was very pleased to support CPA PNG’s admission to IFAC. It has a long association and close working relationship with CPA PNG.”
Australia’s High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency Mr Michael Potts, said that the move demonstrated the close links between Australian and PNG.
He said: “Our relationship is strong on many levels. The support provided to CPA PNG by Australian organisations is another demonstration of just how strong that relationship is.”
