New book launched on Australia-PNG relations

A fascinating new book on the relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea was launched today to coincide with PNG’s 32nd anniversary of Independence.

The publication, entitled Full Circle: Australia and Papua New Guinea 1883–1970, examines the bilateral relationship and contains previously unpublished photographs.

Australia’s High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency Mr Chris Moraitis, said: “This book is an important examination of our shared history. As such, it is fitting for it to be launched around the time of PNG’s Independence anniversary, which marks one of the most important events in our deep and enduring relationship.”

Full Circle provides an absorbing account of the relationship between Australia and PNG from the late nineteenth century to 1970 with a particular focus on the post-Second World War period and the gradual acceptance in both Australia and PNG of the need to move towards decolonisation.

“I am confident that this publication will provide readers, in Australia, PNG and elsewhere, with a clearer understanding of the history of this important relationship,” Mr Moraitis said.

Full Circle was prepared by Dr Stuart Doran from the Historical Publications and Information Section of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

It was produced with assistance from the PNG National Archives and Public Records Service. Many of the photographs in the book come from the PNG National Archives collection and several are being published for the first time.

Full Circle is a companion to the reference work, Australia and Papua New Guinea 1966-1969, which Dr Doran launched in Port Moresby earlier this year. It is the fifth in the series, Australia in the World. The series is designed to increase understanding of Australia’s role in international relations.

The book will be available online at www.dfat.gov.au/publications/index.html
