World AIDS Day – Australia wantaim PNG
World AIDS Day (1 December) is an opportunity to reflect on where we are in the battle against HIV and AIDS in Papua New Guinea, the Australian High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency Chris Moraitis, said today.
“Leadership is the theme chosen for World AIDS Day this year and it would be difficult to think of a better focus,” said Mr Moraitis.
“Only through strong leadership can we stop the spread of this insidious disease and only through strong leadership can we ensure that those living with HIV and AIDS in PNG are treated with respect and dignity.”
The High Commissioner explained that stigma and discrimination associated with HIV and AIDS is probably one of the biggest threats confronting PNG communities. However, there are heartening stories.
“I heard a story recently where a HIV-positive mother was no longer able to care for her seven month old daughter because of health issues. The little girl was gladly taken in by a family with four other children even though it is not yet known whether the little girl herself has been infected with the virus.
“This family has pledged to care for this little girl whether or not she is ultimately diagnosed with HIV.
“I hope that this and other similar stories which I have heard mean that attitudes are changing regarding acceptance and support for people with HIV and AIDS. Respect and understanding of the plight of people living with HIV and AIDS will contribute to helping slow down and ultimately stop the spread of this disease.”
Mr Moraitis said Australia was committed to playing a key role in supporting the leadership of the National AIDS Council Secretariat on this issue.
Through the Sanap Wantaim program Australia is working with a range of partners, both Government and non-government, focusing on PNG’s National Strategic Plan on HIV and AIDS.
“World AIDS Day is a perfect opportunity to stop and reflect on how we can work together to address the challenges of HIV and AIDS,” said Mr Moraitis.
