More Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels receive medallions
…Battle for Australia remembered
Commemorative medallions honouring Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’ care for Australian soldiers during the Second World War were presented today by the Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea (PNG), HE Chris Moraitis.
The medallions were presented following the Battle for Australia service held at the Bomana War Cemetery by The Returned and Services League of Australia – Port Moresby Sub-Branch.
Nepe Kumanyal, an interpreter during World War II, and Naime Raga, a carrier on the Kokoda Track, were the two Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels who received their medallions.
Anna Boina, the widow of John Boino who was a carrier from Popondetta, received the medallion on her husband’s behalf.
Speaking at the presentation of the medallions, Mr Moraitis said the Australian Government has taken the step of recognising Papua New Guineans, those who are fondly remembered as Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, with commemorative medallions.
“The medallions are in recognition of their bravery and tireless support and dedication to Australian Servicemen throughout the Battle for Australia,” he said.
Mr Moraitis said that as Australia’s nearest neighbour, PNG played a key
geo-strategic role in the Battle for Australia such as those battles in Kokoda and Milne Bay.
He said the first Wednesday in September has been chosen as the day to commemorate Battle for Australia day. This day represents the first defeat of Japanese forces on land which occurred at the Battle of Milne Bay.
