World class training facilities for PNG air traffic controllers

PNG’s air traffic controllers now have the latest in training technology at their finger tips following today’s launch of a new facility at Jackson’s Airport.

Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency Chris Moraitis, was on-hand with the Chairman of the PNG Air Services Limited Board, Captain Ted Pakii, to launch the new facilities.

“These state-of-the-art facilities mean that PNG’s air traffic controllers have the best possible training available to them,” said Mr Moraitis.

“It also means the PNG Government will save around K2 million each year, money that was previously spent sending staff overseas for training.

“Air traffic controllers will now be training here in PNG using programs which are simulated on PNG conditions. This means using PNG maps, air space, route structures, radio frequencies and terrain.

“I am proud that Australia is able to be a part of such a progressive and forward-looking program.”

The first course using the new facilities begins next Monday, 7 September.

This project is funded under the Transport Sector Support Project (TSSP) which is an integral part of the PNG-Australia Partnership for Development signed last year by Prime Ministers Somare and Rudd.
