Speech 070629 Journal

Speech by Acting First Secretary Health, AusAID, on the announcement of support for the PNG Medical Journal

29 June 2007; Port Moresby, PNG

I am pleased to be here today to announce AusAID support for the PNG Medical Journal.

The Journal is a major source of health communication both in PNG and internationally, providing information on major health research carried out in Papua New Guinea. As well as PNG, the Journal is currently accessed by health professionals in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, China, the United Kingdom, the USA, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Germany and Vanuatu.

The Australian Government’s aid program supports access to knowledge and information to enable better health outcomes. Through providing current information on issues including medical, allied health, epidemiology, prevention and treatment, the Journal enables health providers, policy makers and administrators to make informed decisions, leading to better health outcomes for the people of PNG.

Over the next three years, AusAID will provide K180,000 to enable the PNG Medical Journal to be published on a quarterly basis. I congratulate the Medical Society of PNG and Professor Mathias Sapuri on this excellent publication, and hope that the Australian Government’s support for this initiative will lead to better health services for the benefit the people of PNG.

Gaye Moore, Acting First Secretary, Health, AusAID
