Launch of ‘PNG Law and Justice Sector on the Move - Success Stories in 2006’

Australian High Commissioner to PNG, HE Mr Chris Moraitis

It is my pleasure to be here for the official launch of ‘PNG Law and Justice Sector on the move - Success Stories in 2006’, a Law and Justice Sector publication.

There is no doubt that a robust law and justice system is vital in providing peace, harmony and justice for the people of PNG, which is why the Australian government is in firm agreement with the government of PNG that law and justice is a major priority for this nation.

Australia works in close partnership with PNG’s Law and Justice Sector to help achieve the vision, set out in its National Law and Justice Policy, of a just, safe and secure society for all. We proudly support this policy, with its strong and clear vision focusing on the rights of all Papua New Guineans to a safe and secure society. Australia therefore provides over K80 million each year to the Law and Justice Sector, in recognition of the importance of a strong legal system to governance, stability and the overall prosperity of PNG.

The formal law and justice agencies, such as the courts, police and correctional services, play a critical role in ensuring a just, safe and secure society for all. However, these agencies are only one part of the picture. We must not forget the vital role played by those that make up the other part of the law and justice picture: the community.

As the stories in this book show us, there are many good parts that are working together to make up the whole of the PNG Law and Justice Sector. The efforts of all those people committed to achieving the goals of the Law and Justice Sector policy, are at the heart of law and justice in PNG.

We all know that there are many serious and difficult law and justice issues facing PNG, and at times, one can feel overwhelmed by the challenges ahead. However, it is important not to forget all of the good work that is being done. Agencies, groups and individuals are striving all over PNG to make their communities safer, prevent criminal activity, protect and promote the rights of those who are most vulnerable and resolve disputes through traditional and customary means.

The stories in this book highlight the many efforts, projects and activities, involving people that work tirelessly across the formal and informal law and justice sectors, to achieve the goal that both PNG and Australia are working towards: a just, safe and secure society for all. These are stories that should be told more often. They tell of the wins, large and small. They illustrate the commitment of individuals striving to make their society a safer and more just place and celebrate the strength, spirit and ingenuity of the PNG community. Importantly, these stories remind us of what we are working towards and encourage us to continue.

I am very pleased to support ‘PNG Law and Justice Sector on the Move - Success Stories in 2006’. This book provides a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and reflect upon the many achievements and successes of the Law and Justice Sector, and most importantly it helps to bring these good news stories to the broader PNG community.

Thank you.
