Congratulatory message to mark Papua New Guinea’s 31st Anniversary of Independence

On behalf of the Government and people of Australia, I would like to express my warmest wishes to the Government and people of Papua New Guinea on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of Independence.
In the years since Independence, Papua New Guinea has had many achievements of which to be proud. It has a robust parliamentary democracy, an independent media and a vocal civil society. Papua New Guinea is involved increasingly in the affairs of our region. Australia is pleased with the role that we have played in assisting Papua New Guinea to achieve these goals.
Australia’s relationship with Papua New Guinea remains one of our deepest and most enduring. It is strong on many levels, with close relationships found between the governments, businesses and peoples of our two countries. Our close relationship is born of history and geography and covers the full range of bilateral interests and experiences.
Australia shares a common aspiration for a stable and prosperous Papua New Guinea. We remain committed to assisting the Papua New Guinea Government achieve improved growth and development.
I wish the Government, communities and people of Papua New Guinea a happy and memorable 31st anniversary of Independence.
